Our Artisan Project - Crystal Legoffe

Interview by Luke Mitchell

The second installation of Our Artisan Project is brought to you by Yuki Team rider Crystal Legoffe. Born in the Yukon, Canada, Crystal is a multi talented snowboarder/artist/photographer, who's creativity on rails is matched only by her skills with the pencil.

Tell us about your story as an artist?

I have been drawing my entire life, my Grandma is a fantastic acrylic painter and my Dad started teaching me how to draw animals as soon as I could hold a pencil. So I guess it runs in the family! I grew up outside of Whitehorse and didn't have much to do, drawing was always a good way to pass the time on super cold days and dark nights, as I entered high school it was also an easy credit ;)

How would you describe your art or yourself as an artist?

HOT MESS. My style is always so all over the place, I would say I'm still quite unrefined. I am so inspired by art, and creators... It makes me want to try different styles so I feel like I'm always experimenting.

What is the message or feeling of this piece?

The feeling of this piece is mixed emotions.

What is the inspiration behind this piece?

I drew on my love of Japan, travel, sushi and food for this piece. I often feel conflicted about my lifestyle and diet choices, always in between "Well, it's not great for the planet that I want to protect... But it is good for my mental health." I also wanted to make something that just looked dope.

What organisation did you choose to donate to and why?

I chose POW (Protect Our Winters) a company started by snowboarding legend Jeremy Jones. This company focuses on working towards carbon neutrality by 2050, a goal set in line with the Paris Agreement, they work with outdoor enthusiasts to save our Winters and our planet.

Onigiri no tori, 2020.

Soapbox moment. Is there anything you want to give thanks for, call out or start a conversation about?

All I wanna say is please recycle (and do it properly!!!) and think carefully about if you really need a single use item or if you're just being lazy. I think we all want a future where we're not swimming in trash.

Where can we check out more of your art?

@notenoughram on instagram!
